A Grand Avenue face-lift

Half-mile stretch of street to get spruced up

Grand Avenue, between Stanton and Lorenz Avenues, will be getting a face-lift starting next spring, Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran said.

The Legislature’s rules committee on Oct. 19 approved the Grand Avenue streetscape project, she said. The project is designed to improve the half-mile pedestrian area of the west side of Grand from Stanton south to Lorenz.

The project will complement the streetscape project completed several years ago in front of the Baldwin Shopping Center, which is on the east side of Grand.

The project includes the installation of colored and imprinted concrete crosswalks and utility strip, patterned sidewalks, decorative street lighting, benches, trash receptacles, trees and other incidental work. The county Public Works Department expects construction to start in early spring of 2016.

The approximately $1.8 million contract was awarded to Roadwork Ahead Inc., the lowest bidder. Funding comes from the Community Revitalization Program. Curran and Legislator Kevan Abrahams secured the money, she said.

Revitalization Program money is in the county capital budget. Legislators may apply to use the funds for capital projects in their district. Revitalization Program projects are required to be for use by the entire community and they are meant to last five years or more.
