DeHaney, O'Connor re-elected as Sani2 commissioners

Carl DeHaney was returned to his seat on the Sanitary District No. 2 Board of Commissioners last Thursday as he defeated challengers Mike Guerriere and Ralph Rose. DeHaney, of Roosevelt, captured 853 votes while Guerriere garnered 545 and Rose tallied 123. DeHaney was appointed to the board in April after Dennis Meekins died over the winter. With the win, DeHaney will serve out the remainder of Meekins’ four-year term.

Longtime commissioner Brian O’Connor, of Baldwin, was also returned to the board with 843 votes cast in his name. O’Connor, a commissioner since 2002, ran unopposed to earn a five-year term on the board.

DeHaney said he was overwhelmed and ecstatic when the results became official. “I’ve never been more proud of the people of Roosevelt who came out [to vote],” he said. “I was just proud of our district. We did what’s right.” DeHaney told the Herald before the election that he wanted to represent the Roosevelt community on the board and broaden Sani2’s program to involve all the district’s communities.

“I’d like to… make sure there’s equal quality with whatever we do across the district,” he said.

O’Connor thanked all those who helped him win re-election, including the residents and business owners who allowed him to post signs on their property. “I want to thank everyone who came out to vote,” he said. “It was a good turnout.”

Much like DeHaney, O’Connor said he wanted to continue to build on the progress Sani2 has made in recent years with its variety of programs.

Polls were open from 2 to 10 p.m. on July 31. The district serves Baldwin and parts of Roosevelt, Uniondale, Freeport, South Hempstead, Rockville Centre and Oceanside.
