Healing the gaping wound that Sandy left

There are times to stand by your political principles, to refuse to compromise. This is not one of them. Too many people –– hard-working, tax-paying, freedom-loving Americans –– have been hurt. There is a gaping wound down the center of the tristate area that must be healed for our nation to be whole again. Congress can begin that long, arduous process by approving the president’s aid package.

If only, I thought, our congressional leaders could experience the sense of fear that one Long Beach homeowner felt last Friday. Then, perhaps, partisan bickering might fall by the wayside, and their decision-making might be guided not by political self-interest, but rather by the humanity that lies hidden inside them.
