LIRR to offer extra train service for Wednesday's evening rush

MTA provides limited bus service on West Hempstead, Ronkonkoma branches; additional trains for Babylon, Ronkonkoma branches

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Wednesday that the Long Island Rail Road will offer eight additional eastbound trains leaving Penn Station from 3:32 to 6:02 p.m. in time for evening rush.

The Ronkonkoma branch, according to MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan, will provide an extra train departing Penn Station at 3:32 p.m., stopping at Woodside, Jamaica, New Hyde Park, Mineola, Westbury, Hicksville, Bethpage, Farmingdale, and then all stops to Ronkonkoma.

On the Babylon branch, the LIRR will dispatch four extra trains departing at 3:40, 4:40, 5:40 and 6:09 p.m. to stop at Jamaica and Rockville Centre, and then proceed to all stops up to Babylon.

Donovan also said the LIRR will continue to operate on a reduced weekend schedule throughout the day, still providing additional bus service to substitute suspended lines on the West Hempstead and eastbound Ronkonkoma branches.

On the West Hempstead Branch, according to the MTA website, commuters may board westbound buses to Valley Stream, which began with a 7:30 a.m. departure from West Hempstead, that will operate at two-hour intervals throughout the day, departing West Hempstead at 9:05 a.m., 11:05 a.m., 1:05 p.m., 3:05 p.m., 5:05 p.m., 7:05 p.m. and 9:05 p.m.

Eastbound buses will also depart from Valley Stream starting at 8:32 a.m., then every two hours at 10:05 a.m., 12:05 p.m., 2:05 p.m., 4:05 p.m., 6:05 p.m., 8:05 p.m. and 10:05 p.m.

While the LIRR encountered some weather-related problems on Tuesday and Wednesday, Donovan said train service was "largely normal" and will resume regular weekday schedule at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23.
