As you pass through the hallways of Baldwin High School, you may see a spirited girl decked out in her team’s color leaving behind a trail of glitter and tinsel in the school’s hallway.

The Blue and Gold girls are in the midst of Sportsnite’s three-month journey filled with hard work, dedication, singing, dancing, stunting and fun. The girls will kick off this year’s 82nd Annual Sportsweek on February 28 with Preview and ending March 7 with Sportsnite. One of the most exciting and important nights of Sportsweek is Banquet. Banquet is a night of singing dedicated to mothers. That night, the girls stand in front of a panel of judges and sing their hearts out to not only show thanks to their mothers and friends on each team, but to try and win the judges hearts and the night. Each team has one Banquet Song and Cheer Captains Joanna Sayed (Gold Team) and Kelly Fitzpatrick (Blue Team) work hard to create four beautiful songs and to teach the girls twice a week.

One of the crowd’s favorite parts of Preview and Sportsnite is to watch the stunts and dance routines. This year’s stunts and dance routines are bound to be jaw dropping. In stunts, the captains create a routine of extravagant and energetic stunting, dancing and tumbling. This year’s Stunts Captains are Aurora Eager-Levitt (Blue Team) and Emily Rice (Gold Team). Blue’s stunt’s theme is “Blue’s American Dream” and Gold’s theme is “Gold’s Vegas Show Girls.” This year’s dance routines are a guaranteed showstopper. Dance Captains Taylor Samuel (Gold Team) and Mariah Gracia (Blue Team) are creating thrilling and entertaining dances that require skill and talent. This year’s dance themes are “Gold’s Superheroes” and “Blue’s Old School Hip Hop.”

Now it’s crunch time for the girls. These next few weeks are crucial, and it is time to start perfecting the routines. Every minute of practice is vital. Both teams are making great progress, and it seems to be neck and neck. Before the girls know it, they will be marching out onto the floor singing as loudly as they can, filling the gym with smiles, laughter and cheer. It’s off to the races for both teams!
