A holiday at Bethany House shelter

‘Human elves’ appear to help out in Santa’s workshop

Several “human elves” turned up at Bethany House on Prospect Street in Baldwin last month to give Santa a hand with sorting and wrapping presents at the shelter’s holiday party.

Organizer Karen Alterson, whose organization Women for Women backs Bethany House, said the event was held for women to pick out gifts for their children. Also on hand: local politicians who helped to wrap gifts.

Founded in 1978, Baldwin-based Bethany House helps homeless women and children on Long Island at a half-dozen area residences by providing shelter, food, clothing, counseling and other services.
