Baldwin Park was teeming with runners and walkers last weekend getting some exercise and raising money for a good cause.

The eighth annual 5K Aids/Cancer Run/Walk took place on June 7 with more than 200 participants running for several organizations.

Richard Brodsky, the president of the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) public charity, organizes the event each year. He is HIV-positive since 1997, a brain cancer survivor since 2002, and a marathon runner for life.

Proceeds benefit people living with cancer and HIV at Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, Center of AIDS Research & Treatment at North Shore University Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Long Island Breast Cancer Action Coalition, 5 Towns Community AIDS Center and activities for people living with HIV and cancer.

From the race, according to Brodsky, between $3,000 and $3,500 will be donated to the organizations caring for people living with HIV and cancer; more than $18,000 in toys and clothing will be donated to organizations caring for sick children and kids from low-income families; and.another $1,000 will be donated for activities which Brodsky personally attends for people living with HIV or cancer.

There were also prizes and trophies for the race’s top finishers, including Justin Sommer, who came in first place overall with a finishing time of 17:17.
