With snow and ice pelting Long Island for much of last night Baldwin District schools will be closed today.

The district announced the closure on its website at 5:30 a.m. this morning via the following announcement:

"Important Message: 1/27/2011 - 5:30am. Schools will be closed Thursday January 27, 2011 due to inclement weather. Additionally the Parent Academy Workshop scheduled for this evening has been postponed."

Yesterday, the Town of Hempstead declared a snow emergency and urged residents to remove vehicles from roadways in an effort to help plowing efforts as another snowstorm is expected to hit the area.

"Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders at the first sign of snow," said Supervisor Kate Murray. "More than 225 pieces of equipment are utilized in the salt spreading and road plowing operation."

Hempstead started salting operation at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, said Spokesperson Susan Trenkle Pukalsky.

The snow is expected to end early this morning after dropping between nine and 14 inches. Then it will be mostly sunny and breezy with temperatures in the 30s.
