Our firefighters are heroes

To the Editor:

I would like to congratulate local firefighters, and each and every member of the Baldwin Fire Department on their outstanding heroism on the night of May 3, when they fought and contained the serious fire on Merrick Road in Baldwin (see front-page story).

It is commendable that they are willing to make such a commitment to serving their community, and I am sure that I speak for the people of Nassau County when I say their service is greatly appreciated. They are truly role models to the community. I want them to know how proud I am of the courage they summon to save lives and the wisdom they call upon to perform in the face of life-and-death situations.
To the heroic firefighters: If there is ever anything that I can do to assist you in the future, please do not hesitate to contact my office. Again, I am humbled by your service to us all and grateful that you came through this safely.

Joe Scannell
Nassau County Legislator, 5th District

Thanks for the support

To the Editor:

The Baldwin School District thanks Karako Suits in Lynbrook and Syms in Westbury for their generous outpouring of good will to two of our students in a time of family crisis.

Margaret Collard, Syms's vice president, and Todd Lesser, store manager; and Gideon Foular, Karako Suits' store manager, and Ana Hernandez, administrative professional, immediately responded to the students' needs, made all the necessary arrangements and took such good care of them while they were in your stores. The Baldwin School District administration is extremely appreciative of your support.

Dr. James Mapes
Superintendent, Baldwin School District

The school board is transparent

To the Editor:

I attended the May 4 Candidates Forum and, while I applaud those who seek the opportunity to serve our children and our community, I left unconvinced that I should vote for any of the challengers.
