Cub Scouts take it to the track for Pinewood Derby

Kids in Cub Scout Pack 824 had some fun late last month during their annual Pinewood Derby in the lower level of St. Christopher’s Church.

The pack has about 45 children, from kindergarten through fifth grade, who each constructed their own Pinewood Derby car from a block of wood. In a Pinewood Derby, cars start by gravity from a standstill on a track and run down a ramp to a finish line unaided. The track is an inclined ramp with wood strips down the center to guide the cars.

One of the pack’s den leaders, Ron Jackson, who has two sons in the pack, said it’s an event that kids look forward to each year. The top finishers will bring their cars to a regional event in March where they will square off against other top finishers from packs across Long Island.
