Daniel Donovan Schoen Esq., 45, the eldest son of former Baldwin Board of Education President, B.A. Schoen, passed away Oct. 15 at his home in Denver, CO. The coroner’s report listed an intracranial or berry aneurysm as the cause of death.

Schoen is survived by his wife, Debora and daughter, Anabelle, as well as his mother, Jane Stedman Schoen, his parents B.A. and Ann Schoen, brothers Patrick (Tracy) and David (Lindsay), sister Molly (Jonathan) Quigley as well as eight nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles and cousins who all loved, admired and enjoyed being with him.

Schoen lived in or visited Baldwin every year and had many friends on Long Island. He worked as a bus boy at Otto’s Sea Grill as a teenager and tended bar at the Sportsman’s Cafe on Woodcleft Canal when it was affectionately known as the “Bucket of Blood” by patrons and critics.

Schoen graduated from the University of Colorado, Denver and also attended the Webb Institute. He studied post-graduate economics at Michigan State University and earned a J.D. from Denver University Law School.

He was the Executive Director of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and was an outspoken opponent of the death penalty. Schoen was a gifted athlete and enjoyed windsurfing, rollerblading and snow boarding.

An open house will be held near Schoen’s home in Denver on Nov. 2, and there will be a service at Mayflower Church (3001 South Acoma St., Englewood, CO) on Nov. 3. A reception will follow the service.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the “Daniel Schoen Memorial Trust,” care of CCDB at 955

Bannock St., 2nd Floor, Denver CO 80204. This fund will be used to help Schoen’s wife and daughter adjust to their loss.
