Fire on Woodoak swiftly controlled

The Baldwin Fire Department responded to reports of smoke issuing from a house at 470 Woodoak Drive at approximately 1 a.m. this morning. According to a source at the Department, when firefighters arrived they pushed into the burning home and had the blaze under control within an hour. The family residing in the house managed to exit safely before the fire department arrived and were later assisted with funds for food and clothing by the American Red Cross. The cause of the fire is, as yet, unknown.

The Nassau Red Cross reminds Long Islanders that as temperatures drop, house fires tend to increase. They suggest area residents ensure heating sources are inspected and cleaned and that when items like space heaters are utilized, that they be placed at least three-feet from flammable materials. They also recommend testing smoke detectors monthly as well as replacing the batteries every year.
