City-chic might best describe the intimate décor at Press, a restaurant and lounge that opened only weeks ago. Owner, Alfonso Nappi, is no stranger to the scene, having owned several other lounges prior to launching Press.

Still in the tweaking stage, Press is experimenting with fare to see which the patrons will love the most. The kitchen and menu has been set up by Chef Mark Wisehart of Vero Restaurant & Wine Bar in Midtown Manhattan. In addition to offering salads, paninis, pizza and pasta, Nappi is planning to add entrees he grew up with and adores … hearty Italian comfort foods.

In lieu of the traditional breadbasket we enjoyed an assortment of olives, fresh parmigiana cheese, tomatoes and ultra-thin bread sticks. A hearty starter was meatballs with ricotta cheese. Two enormous meatballs (your choice of beef or turkey and chicken) smothered in red sauce joined a mound of ricotta cheese garnished with basil, and toasted ciabatta bread — quite satisfying to share. Appetizers (listed as “Share”) range from $10 for eggplant coponata to $18 for an assorted meat and cheese plate.

Pulpo a la plancha, a salad topped with seared Spanish octopus, offered a sensational mélange of chickpeas, cucumbers, peppers, imported olives, hearts of palm and cherry tomatoes in citrus vinaigrette. Of the pizzas, which are thin crusted and crisp, we enjoyed ours with roasted wild mushrooms, thyme, Asiago cheese and white truffle oil. Salads and pizzas are $12 to $15.

Our panini of choice arrived with roasted potatoes. We savored the tasty merging of roasted zucchini and tomatoes, goat cheese, and Balsamic onions inside crisp bread. Other options include prosciutto, fig, gorgonzola and rosemary oil, or hot sopressata, roasted red pepper, watercress and Asiago cheese. Panini’s are $12 and $13.

Tortelli is a must-try. Shaped as “beggar’s purses,” these pasta parcels are slightly sweet from fresh pear among of filling of three cheeses: pobiola, grana padono and ricotta. The sauce is burro fuso (melted butter with sage) … topping a dish to truly dream about. Pastas range from $14 for rigatoni filetto di pomodoro to $18 for shrimp cappellini.

Press specialty drinks are $9, with plenty of flavored Mojito’s, Martini’s and Bellini’s. Pink Lemonade sounded spectacular: raspberry vodka, Limoncello, fresh raspberries, lemon, mint and sugar. I will return for one. Desserts are $7 each.

Hours are noon to closing, Monday through Friday, and 4 p.m. until closing, Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday is ladies’ night, and on Thursdays, martini’s and panini’s are $7 each. Twice a month on Saturday nights is karaoke.

Catering is available on and off premises. The lounge downstairs can accommodate groups up to 30. Delivery covers a five-mile radius. If you’d like a special dish, call ahead and they will accommodate. Reservations are suggested.
