New BFD chiefs take oaths

For the 120th year, the Baldwin Fire Department hosted its annual installation ceremony on March 28, but for first the time in the department’s history a female was sworn in as chief.

Karen Bendel officially took over as chief on Jan. 1, but the ceremony at the Coral House was the department’s night to celebrate her and her deputy chiefs — Michael Jazylo, first deputy chief, Frank Cesare, second deputy chief and Michael Esposito, third deputy chief.

Bendel said it was an honor to be sworn in at the ceremony and even more special because her father, Ex-Chief William Werfelman, administered the oath of office. “The night was spectacular and memorable,” she said.

The new chief and her deputy chiefs have been serving in their current roles since January and will remain in them through the end of the year.
