Night out against crime

Residents of Baldwin and Freeport came out to support National Night Out Against Crime held at the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Freeport on Aug. 4. Nassau County Legislator Laura Curran, along with Dewey Smalls and the Freeport Neighborhood Watch and Bethel A.M.E. Church, co-hosted this event.

National Night Out is an annual event held in more than 11,000 communities nationwide to increase awareness of crime, gang activity and violence threatening neighborhoods. This year’s event focused on anti-crime initiatives that strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/resident partnerships. The goal is to forge a strong sense of community by establishing partnerships with young people, parents, government and law enforcement agencies to combat crime and violence – while having fun.

Police officers from the 1st Precinct and firefighters were on hand to speak with residents. At the event residents were able to obtain information on many county and village services, as well as community-based organizations and youth services.
