The Baldwin Public Library hosted Flamenco Music, Song and Dance on Oct. 25, a celebration of Hispanic heritage through the Spanish art of flamenco.

Eighty residents attended the event and participated in a flamenco hand-clapping lesson, known as palmas, and the calling of Spanish phrases of verbal encouragement, known as jaleos. The participants also saw live flamenco dancing and learned how to play castanets.

The workshop was led by Arts Flamenco, comprised of Jorge Navarro, dancer and choreographer; Raphael Brunn, flamenco guitarist; and several dancers. The project was made possible, in part, with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts' Decentralization Program, administered by the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport.
