Parks spruced up after community cleanup

Despite some rain in the area earlier in the day, more than 100 volunteers came out to clean up Silver Lake and Milburn Pond parks last Saturday, on what turned out to be a beautiful and productive afternoon.

Erik Mahler, of Mahler Realty and co-president of the Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, which both helped run the cleanup, said he was happy with the community response. The event was also sponsored by Assemblyman Brian Curran, County Executive Ed Mangano, the Baldwin Civic Association, the Baldwin Foundation for Education, Baldwin 4 Children and Sanitary District No. 2.

This is the third year the event has been held. “Every year it’s an opportunity for the community to come together and participate,” Curran said. “We’re always committed to restoring our parks and keeping the environment and our communities clean and this is just another way we can make that happen.”

The volunteers picked up trash in each park, including the waterways, and members from Sanitary District No. 2 used power washers to clean railings, benches and sidewalks.

Mahler said it was nice to see people come together for a good cause. “It’s great for the environment and great for Baldwin,” he said.

Curran added that he and Mangano were “thrilled to meet and welcome the many families, volunteers and interested community members, who joined us for this good cause.”
