Residents: come work the room

Baldwin library to host job fair next week

Residents struggling to find work in a tough job market need look no further than their very own library. Seeking to build on the success of last year's job fair, Baldwin Public Library officials have confirmed that over 30 employers will be attending this year's event on Sept. 15.

"We expect a good turnout this year," said Library Director Maria Sysak. She acknowledged that the slumping job market will have a lot to do with how many people attend this year's event, which is being held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and that officials expect well over last year's tally of 350. In addition, 32 employers — eight more than last year — had signed on for the job fair as of Herald press time. Officials anticipate that the event, which will take place in the Kevin B. Kamen Community Room, will likely have to spill out into the surrounding hallways. Said Sysak: "We hope to have enough space for the tables."

This will be the second job fair held by the Baldwin library, which in 2008 became the first Nassau library to host such an event. This year's event is being co-sponsored by the library and the HempsteadWorks Career One-Stop Center. Participating employers include those in the fields of health care, retail, finance, banking, non-profit organizations and law enforcement. Organizations specializing in job-assistance programs for young adults and for people with disabilities will also be in attendance.

Residents taking part in the job fair are urged to dress appropriately and bring multiple copies of their resumes. Additional parking is available behind the Baldwin Fire Department headquarters. For more information, visit call (516) 223-6228 or visit www.baldwinpl.org.
