Chris Weidman, who won a state wrestling title at Baldwin Senior High School and also wrestled for Hofstra, had a day named in his honor last week after he won the UFC mixed martial arts championship in an upset over Anderson Silva.

The day, July 17, was proclaimed by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, and the celebrations centered around the Coral House catering hall in Baldwin. Among the crowd of around 200 were Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, who both praised Weidman for his tenacity and for bringing pride to the area.

“You got Veterans Day, Memorial Day and you got Chris Weidman Day,” the honoree said, speaking to a jubilant crowd. “You can’t beat that.”
