Two signs designating Levy-Lakeside School’s front baseball field as Forever 9 Field, which the Merrick-North Merrick Little League hung in April without permission from the Merrick School District, will remain up for the rest of the year, the Merrick Board of Education decided on June 4.
The board also ruled that the Little League can apply in 2014 for permission to keep the signs up.

On April 15, 1985, 15-year-old Jason Gruen was walking into Manhasset High School, headed to class, when his heart suddenly stopped and he dropped to the ground, dead. A heart defect had gone undetected. His mother, Susan Gruen Helsinger, who now makes her home in Merrick, was devastated. She still is.

Robbie’s Run, which commemorates 9-year-old Robbie Levine of Merrick, who died of heart failure in 2005 while rounding the bases during a Little League practice, attracted more than 1,700 participants between the annual event’s 5K, mile- and half-mile races through Merrick streets and fields on Sunday. As part of the festivities, Joseph Rocco, president of the Merrick-North Little League announced that the league was naming its front baseball field at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick as the “Forever 9: Robbie Levine Foundation Field."
