The Calhoun Sports Boosters Club held its eighth annual golf outing on June 27. Some 160 golfers attended, playing the Blue Course at Bethpage State Park. The foursome from Meroke Auto & Collision had the winning score. The guests of honor included past boosters president and vice president Keith and Cheryl Pastuch. Gregg Muscarella, Calhoun’s wrestling and badminton coach, was also given special recognition. Calhoun High School senior Jake Thomas recently learned that he is the 2011 recipient of the Diamond Award, an annual honor given to the most outstanding offensive player and pitcher in Nassau County high school baseball. Thomas is the first Calhoun student in the school’s history to earn the award. more

For four years, 18-year-old Emily Keller led something of a secretive life at Calhoun High School in Merrick. In early June, Calhoun High School senior Erin Zseller will head to the war-ravaged nation of Uganda as part of a two-week volunteer mission sponsored by the non-profit organization Invisible Children. Zseller was chosen from a pool of 10 Calhoun applicants, and she will be the fourth student from the school to make the trip to Uganda in the past three years. more
