Sarah Sandler founded a Glamour Gals chapter at Calhoun this year after being inspired by the charity’s mission to foster self-esteem and mutual respect between two generations. Twenty Calhoun students have visited local nursing homes, where they have developed relationships with older women through makeovers, manicures and conversation. more

Gillian, a liver transplant survivor, is a “Wish Ambassador” for Make-A-Wish and was recently honored with the U.S. Tennis Association Eastern Section’s Service to/People with Disabilities Award.

Overcoming disease, Merrick teen inspires

Gillian Cohen was just 7 years old when she received a life-saving liver transplant, but she has never forgotten it. Now a junior at Calhoun High School, Gillian spends much of her time working to help ensure that others in need of organ transplants get the same second chance at life that she did. The list of public venues in which she has spoken about the importance of organ donation has grown. more

St. Baldrick's fundraiser returning to Calhoun

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven, nonprofit charitable organization that raises money for childhood cancer research, will host one of its signature head-shaving events at Calhoun High School on March 18, when more than 200 people will shave their heads “in solidarity” with children with cancer and raise money to eradicate childhood cancers. more

In the fall of her junior year at Calhoun High School, soccer star Kayla Cappuzzo, now an 18-year-old senior, played with her travel team, the Albertson Fury ’95, in a college showcase sponsored by the Elite Clubs National League in San Diego. Immediately after, she received an email from Tracey Leone, head women’s coach at Northeastern University. Then she heard from Leone’s husband, Ray, Harvard’s head coach. more

Cops: Teens break into Calhoun at night

Police officers nabbed Matt Delucia, 17, and Kevin Hassan, 16, both of Merrick, while they were burglarizing Calhoun High School on Sunday night, according to the Nassau County Police Department’s 1st Precinct. Delucia and Hassan reportedly ran as the officers approached, but they were stopped and arrested after police corralled them just feet off campus, at Relyea Drive and Charlson Court. more
