Massive mortgage fraud alleged

Baldwin resident Vertus Vielot, 35, was one of 17 people indicted last week after a two-year investigation into what is being called the largest mortgage and identity theft scheme in Nassau County history. Vielot was charged under New York’s Organized Crime Control Act with 12 counts of second-degree grand larceny, first-degree scheme to defraud and fourth-degree conspiracy, and faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. more

In a departure from plans made by the previous administration, Nassau County lawmakers have agreed to purchase property on Harrison Avenue and Merrick Road for the construction of a new 1st Precinct police station. The acquisition of the parcel — which is across Harrison Avenue from the existing station — puts to rest an earlier idea to lease space in the Rosen Shopping Center on Grand Avenue. more
