The Town of Hempstead is increasing road crews assigned to pothole repair by 66 percent over last year, according to Supervisor Kate Murray, who held a news conference in North Merrick on Monday morning to announce the increased resources.

When customers walk into Gennaro Jewelers on Bedford Avenue, they may notice a sign hung above the doorway that reads, “The growth of any business is nurtured one customer at a time.” Gary Hudes, the shop’s owner, said his staff lives by the mantra and similar sayings posted around the store, which is among the reasons the shop has been in business for 90 years.

In a race for the Town of Hempstead’s 6th Councilmatic District, which incorporates East Meadow, Levittown, Plainedge, Salisbury and portions of Bethpage, North Bellmore, North Merrick, Seaford and Wantagh, Republican incumbent of 13 years Gary Hudes faces challenger Diane Madden.
Hudes, of Levittown, has been the president of Gennaro Jewelers, Inc. in Bellmore for 32 years, and Madden, of East Meadow, is an animal rights activist and a co-founder of Hope for Hempstead Shelter.

A gala retirement dinner was held recently in honor of Robin Karp, executive assistant to Town of Hempstead Councilman Gary Hudes, a Republican from Levittown. The celebration took place at the Sands in Lido Beach. Karp served on the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce and worked for 25 years in the Town of Hempstead, including the last 10 years for Hudes.

There are big-picture issues that the town of Hempsteand and Nassau County will have to tackle together. Foremost among them is the Lighthouse project, a sweeping proposal to transform 150 acres surrounding the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale from the barren asphalt of a parking lot to a residential and commercial zone.
