Nassau County Legislator David Denenberg held a news conference in Bellmore on Tuesday to urge the Long Island Power Authority to increase efforts to remove trees from streets and get the power back on at homes in the Bellmores and Merricks, which were devastated by Irene. Above, among the areas that Denenberg identified as particularly hard hit was Florence Street in south Merrick.

Legislator urges LIPA to get the lights back on

Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg is urging the Long Island Power Authority to “turn up the heat” and restore power to his Bellmore and Merrick constituents. At a news conference held outside his Bellmore office on Tuesday afternoon, Denenberg and several local residents voiced their disappointment with LIPA’s response to the hurricane, particularly in areas south of Merrick Road. more

Bellmore-Merrick slowly emerges from Irene

Theresa Policaro has made her home on Hewlett Lane in south Bellmore for more than 30 years, and so, she said, she was reluctant to leave her house when she was ordered to evacuate last Friday by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano in preparation for Hurricane Irene, which ripped a swath of destruction across Long Island over the weekend. more
