Every day, nearly 50,000 vehicles illegally pass stopped school buses in New York state. According to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee 2009 report, 69 students were injured between 2002 and 2004 by motorists illegally passing buses. One student was killed.

For the fourth consecutive year, the 16-mile stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County was named the deadliest road for pedestrians in the tristate area by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign. The 2012 report, “Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” was released on March 7.

The entire Nassau County fleet of buses was required to undergo extensive safety inspections while the municipal Long Island Bus system was being privatized in December, becoming NICE Bus. While the buses were being inspected to meet New York State Department of Transportation standards, service continued, for the most part, as usual.

In a late-night session Monday evening, the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a contract with Veolia Transportation Inc. to take over operation of Long Island Bus. The decision came after hundreds voiced their concerns about the contract at a Dec. 5 public hearing.

The Nassau County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the agreement before it is submitted to the county Legislature for a vote, but members of New York Public Interest Research Group Fund want the details now
