The National Weather Service issued a flash flood and severe thunderstorm watch on July 15 for southern Nassau County. But in parts of Bellmore and Wantagh, officials said, a “straight-line wind event” caused damage.

Many South Shore homeowners are breathing easier thanks to Governor Cuomo’s decision last week to use money from the N.Y. State Housing Recovery Program to compensate those whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but whose flood insurance claims were rejected by FEMA because the damage had been caused by “earth movement” rather than directly by floodwaters.
