On Oct. 21, 1982, Democrat Mario Cuomo, then a candidate for governor of New York, was campaigning furiously on Long Island. Among his stops was WGBB radio, on Landsdowne Avenue in Merrick, where he debated Lewis Lehrman, his Republican-Conservative opponent and an investment banker. Richard Kessel, a native Merokean whom Cuomo later named executive director of the New York State Consumer Protection Board, was there that day. He had lunch with Cuomo afterward. more

Because of inclement weather, Bellmore’s annual Holiday Extravaganza and tree lighting has been postponed. The event, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, was set for Friday, Dec. 6. Debby Izzo, the chamber’s president, confirmed that the Holiday Extravaganza was rescheduled for Friday, Dec. 13. more

For just the second time ever, female athletes at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore took to the school’s main field for a nighttime game last Thursday, Sept. 26. Like the following night’s Homecoming game between Kennedy and South Side High School’s football teams, relatives and friends of players stood cheering in the stands, music blared from loudspeakers, and the JFK Sports Boosters Club sold school clothing. more
