Residents of the 8th State Senate District, which stretches along the South Shore from Baldwin to Lindenhurst, do not now have a representative in the New York State Legislature’s upper chamber. This troubles some as Albany legislators and Gov. Andrew Cuomo negotiate this month over how the state will allocate its more than $100 billion budget.

North Merrick School District Superintendent David Feller will become president of the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents on June 1. With the position, he will also assume a spot on the Commissioner’s Advisory Council of the New York State Council of School Superintendents, which meets three to four times a year with the New York State Education Department commissioner, currently Dr. John King Jr.

When Dr. Henry Kiernan arrived in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District in July 2005, newly hired as superintendent of schools, he found a district with a 1 percent dropout rate. Seventy-five percent of seniors from the district’s three high schools –– Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham –– went on to four-year colleges, and another 22 percent to two-year colleges.
