A F.I.R.S.T. for East Rockaway middle schoolers

Robotics team captures Champion's Award

On Feb. 28, the East Rockaway Middle School Robotics Team captured the coveted Champion’s Award at the Long Island F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League Championship tournament held at Longwood High School.

The FLL Champion’s Award is the most prestigious award that an FLL team can win. It celebrates the ultimate success of the FIRST mission and the FLL values. It measures how the team members inspire and motivate others about the excitement of science and technology, solve problems, and demonstrate respect and gracious professionalism to everyone involved in the competition.

One tremendous FLL team wins the Champion’s Award at each of the Championship level tournaments held across the globe. With more than 13,000 teams and 85 Championship Tournaments — that’s a lot of inspiration!

East Rockaway coaches and technology teachers Nick Cimorelli and Hugh Howard would like to congratulate the team members and all competitors on a truly memorable season.

Team members include fifth, seventh and eighth graders Alex Sharky, Declan Louw, Peter Liotta, James Tierney, Courtney Jackson, Brandon Jackson, Rory Sloan, James Lukens, Andrew Garcia, James Morris, and John Machovec.

“We would like to thank the CAMBR Foundation, The East Rockaway Education Foundation, and The Bank of America Foundation for their grants to help support and obtain the needed equipment to compete in the competition,” said Cimorelli. “This equipment for the robotics competitions and is now being used in the 7th grade technology class. Next year it will be incorporated in the 8th grade Technology class and the high school Electronics class.”
