Race in New York's 6th Senate District kicks off

Republican incumbent Kemp Hannon to face winner of Democratic primary

Reform in Albany and lower taxes are major issues on the minds of voters, and apparently they are priorities for the candidates for the state’s 6th Senate District seat as well.

Former Nassau County Legislator David Mejias is taking on longtime incumbent Sen. Kemp Hannon in the state Senate race. Mejias, a resident of Farmingdale, got the nod from the Democratic Party but may face a primary challenger or two in September. Hannon, a Republican from Garden City, is seeking re-election to a seat he has held since 1989.

The lineup for the Democratic primary remained uncertain as the Herald went to press. A Nassau County Board of Elections official confirmed on Monday that the board is awaiting court decisions that will determine whether Ethan Irwin of Levittown and Francesca Carlow of Plainview will remain on the ballot.
