Judge Yannelli honored at Mayor's Classic

Nearly 200 people attended the 22nd annual Mayor’s Golf and Tennis Classic & Dinner Monday night, the primary fundraiser for the Rockville Centre Community Fund, at the Seawane Club in Hewlett Harbor — about 125 golfers, 30 for tennis and the rest for dinner only.

Former Village Justice Frank Yannelli was the guest of honor. Yannelli was introduced by former Village Justice Robert Williams, his colleague for 16 years, and among the speakers were Mayor Mary Bossart and Dr. Barry Dov Schwartz, the spiritual leader of Temple B’nai Sholom who referred to the Jewish harvest festival of Succot, likening the ceremonial citrus, shaped like a heart, to Yannelli’s character.

Among the highlights of the all-day event were DeVa Gantt, a writer of historical-romance fiction set in the antebellum South, who signed her books during the tennis luncheon and the golf outing hole-in-one prize, a new Infiniti, provided by Legacy Infiniti of Lynbrook.

Each year the Community Fund provides confidential assistance to hundreds of people in emergency need. Unlike other non-profit charities, the fund is directed exclusively to Rockville Centre residents, who have received more than $950,000 since the fund was founded in 1987.
