Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park, which was devastated by last October’s Hurricane Sandy. The majority of the funds were raised by Barnum Woods students, who amassed more than $13,000 by selling chocolate bars last spring. more

A video montage showed photographs from the early life of Richard Novarro, leading to his days as a teacher at Barnum Woods Elementary School. Accompanying the photos were quotes from Novarro, to the tune of “All the Things You Are” — a song he selected for graduation when his students walked the stage. Richard Novarro, who had taught at Barnum Woods Elementary School since 1985, died on Nov. 24, at age 63. Novarro taught mostly fifth grade during his 27 years at the school, though he led third-, fourth- and sixth-grade classes as well. He was instrumental in developing the school’s Character Education Committee, which promoted positive character education by way of assemblies, class projects and activities. He was one of the founders of the school’s Student Council Committee and student government. more
