In 2011, three Barnum Woods fifth-grade students embarked on a search for the early-childhood home of Eleanor Roosevelt in Salisbury. Roosevelt, born Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, married Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was president from 1933 to 1945.

The motto of Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park is “Together we are better.” In East Meadow, Barnum Woods Elementary School’s motto is “We use our head, heart and hands in all we do.”
Last Friday, the two schools backed up those words at a ceremony in the central courtyard of Barnum Woods, where school officials donated $18,500 to the Hegarty School, which was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

After several months of fundraising, Barnum Woods Elementary School officials plan to donate $18,500 to the Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School in Island Park, which was devastated by last October’s Hurricane Sandy. The majority of the funds were raised by Barnum Woods students, who amassed more than $13,000 by selling chocolate bars last spring.

A special Father’s Day event in East Meadow continued for the third consecutive year, as 160 fathers, children, nieces and nephews joined together at East Meadow Bowl on Front Street on June 14 for a night of bowling and family fun.

A video montage showed photographs from the early life of Richard Novarro, leading to his days as a teacher at Barnum Woods Elementary School. Accompanying the photos were quotes from Novarro, to the tune of “All the Things You Are” — a song he selected for graduation when his students walked the stage. By the time the nearly 10-minute video was over, there were few dry eyes in the room.

Richard Novarro, who had taught at Barnum Woods Elementary School since 1985, died on Nov. 24, at age 63.
Novarro taught mostly fifth grade during his 27 years at the school, though he led third-, fourth- and sixth-grade classes as well. He was instrumental in developing the school’s Character Education Committee, which promoted positive character education by way of assemblies, class projects and activities. He was one of the founders of the school’s Student Council Committee and student government.

Barnum Woods fifth-grader Sophie Di Scala, 11, decided to collect donations for Island Harvest after reading about a Wisconsin 12-year-old, Zach Harmon, who was able to collect more than 2,000 donations last April.
