Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice won election to the 4th Congressional District seat now held by Democrat Carolyn McCarthy, who is retiring. She defeated Republican Bruce Blakeman, a former presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature. more
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a statewide Ebola plan on Oct. 16 that called for the coordination of health care, Port Authority and Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers to combat a potential spread of the Ebola virus should it cross New York’s borders. He also designated eight hospitals, including Long Island’s North Shore-LIJ, in Nassau County, and Stony Brook University Hospital, in Suffolk, to act as regional centers for treating patients with Ebola. more

The East Meadow School District is slated to receive $36.74 million in state aid in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s recently proposed 2014-15 budget, about $387,000 more than it received this year, a 1.07 percent increase. more

The Jets’ old, dark-green scoreboard still stands in a dirt field at the team’s former training camp on Hofstra University’s north campus. “The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare,” it reads. Call it a monument to the past, which will soon be removed to make way for the future –– a 63,000-square-foot addition to the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ Medical School, which was founded in 2008 and welcomed its first class of 40 in 2011. The $39.5 million project, funded in part with a $14.5 million state grant, will more than double the size of the medical school. more
