Roughly 200 pedestrians were killed on Long Island streets from 2010 to 2012, according to “The Region’s Most Dangerous Roads for Walking,” a report produced by the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, a non-profit organization committed to decreasing pedestrian fatalities. Eighty-eight died on Nassau County streets.

Met by cheers and applause from family and friends, the members of East Meadow High School’s class of 2013 filed onto the John Barbour Memorial Field, waving excitedly as they found their seats. After a recital of the Pledge of Allegiance and a student-led rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the ceremony began.

“Our time together has been unreal, surreal and truly fantastic. Together as a class, we are something amazing,” W.T. Clarke Valedictorian Daniel Wang told his fellow graduates. “We are all unique in our own ways, but that’s what makes us special. There are so many challenges waiting for our solutions. Let us explore our surroundings and be the change our world needs.”
