It’s all about the children at St. Raymond’s School of East Rockaway, said Sister Ruthanne Gypalo. The beloved principal has spent 25 years as not only the school’s leader, but as a hero to those around her. Whenever you hear students and administrators talk about her, it is with such pride and joy. It’s as if they consider her to be family, a familiar guide, and the feeling is mutual.

Lynbrook’s Our Lady of Peace School and St. Raymond’s School in East Rockaway will join in the celebration of National Catholic Educational Association “Catholic Schools Week 2011” from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5. This year’s theme is “Catholic School: A+ for America.” Both schools will participate in a variety of events for the students, parents and community.

St, Raymond's YOUth Group will presents Rodgers and Hammerstein's beloved musical, "Carousel" in October. Tickets are $10 for all shows except Friday, Oct. 22, $5 student tickets will be available. Performance dates and times are: Sat., Oct. 16, 7:30 p.m; Sun., Oct. 17, 3 p.m.; Fri., Oct. 22, 7:30 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. and Sun., Oct. 24, 3 p.m. St. Raymond School Auditorium, 263 Atlantic Ave. East Rockaway. Doors open 30 minutes prior to show time. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or in advance by calling call (516) 599-3827 or (516) 593-0658.

“So long as this memorial stands, so long as the village of East Rockaway endures, we will always remember the loss and feel the pain of the loved ones that you lost, and that we lost, on that horrific day.”
Those were the words of the Rev. Mark Lukens of the Bethany Congregational Church in East Rockaway as he opened the 9/11 memorial services last Saturday in Memorial Park.

Family members, friends, and residents, as well as state, town, county and village officials and local spiritual leaders of all denominations filled St. Raymond's Church to capacity on July 9 to say goodbye to East Rockaway's Mayor Edward T. Sieban, who died suddenly on July 3 from acute pancreatitis. He was 49.

On Mother’s Day, St. Raymond of Penyafort Parish honored one of their own, Elizabeth Tortorella, with a very special “Mother of the Year” award for her faith and courage in defying her doctor’s advice to terminate her pregnancy because of a life threatening illness.
“It was a surprise,” said Tortorella, referring to the award. “[St. Raymond’s Parish] realized I had pain and they mentioned I was the mom who went against the doctors.”
