First Sgt. Thomas Seifert of East Rockaway was selected by Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) to be inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. Seifert, 43, was one of the youngest recipients of the award. He was honored at a ceremony on Aug. 19 at the Robert F. Garrison Post No. 3350 on Main Street, where he is a member. more

Thomas Lonergan, 60, died on May 28 at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington,VT. He was born on October 15,1949 in New York, NY to the late Michael and Lillian Lonergan. They moved to East Rockaway when Thomas was a child. He is survived by his four children: Thomas, Terrence, Joseph, Roxanne and a brother Joseph Lonergan, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. more

Lynbrook officials are bringing the Vietnam Moving Wall — the half-size replica of the Vietnam Memorial Monument in Washington, D.C.— to the village in June. So far, officials have raised $6,000 — which leaves them $19,000 still to go. "We need to help the vets and show our respect for all their dedication and patriotism," said Lynbrook Trustee Alan Beach, who, along with the Western Long Island Detachment Marine Corps League, is spearheading the effort to bring the Moving Wall to Lynbrook. more
