The Nassau County Legislature voted Monday night to approve about 380 layoffs of county employees. The layoffs could take place before the end of the month. According to Dave Denenberg, a Democrat from Merrick who represents the 19th District, the layoff plan was approved along party lines, with 11 Republicans voting for it and six Democrats against it. Two Democratic legislators were absent for the vote.

Long Island Bus riders and workers said they got angry when they were forced to wait more than two hours on Monday for a public hearing on a contract with Veolia Transportation, Inc. that would privatize Nassau’s public bus system. The crowd that convened at the county Legislature building catcalled at legislators to get under way and booed at County Executive Edward Mangano, a Republican from Bethpage, when he addressed the Legislature.

It’s no secret that Nassau County is going through a rough fiscal period. The county faces an estimated $310 million deficit in 2012. County Executive Ed Mangano is still paying for the previous administrations’ unaffordable labor contracts, the assessment system is broken and the global recession has hit everyone, including Nassau County.
