The newest weapon in the fight against bug bugs is none other than man’s best friend. In this case, it’s Polly, a petite female rat terrier that might just lick you to death before she sniffs out the creepy crawlers. And Arrow Exterminators’ owners Jackie Grabin and Debby Tappan, along with Polly’s trainer, Tom Jordan warn those bugs that go bump in the night that Polly will be on your trail before you can find your next meal. “The dog is very effective,” Grabin said. “She’s improved our ways to make inspections. This is the same theory behind when dogs are trained to sniff termites or dogs are trained to sniff narcotics at an airport.” more

The popular daytime talk show “The View” hosted its third annual “Mutt Show” during the week of the American Kennel Club’s competition to bring attention to shelter animals and mixed breeds. Presented by Pedigree, the show featured viewers’ dogs as well as shelter dogs — Mutt-i-grees — brought from North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington. more

Three animal rescue volunteers have filed a lawsuit against the Town of Hempstead, Supervisor Kate Murray and seven other employees after the volunteers were banned from the town’s Wantagh animal shelter — where they had worked for years — for what they say is retaliation for speaking out to shelter employees and town officials about abuse and neglect. more
