New York City Center Encore! began twenty years ago with a mission to revive the wonderful musicals of the past. With little to no scenery and brief rehearsal time, talented and often famous actors present 4 to 6 performances of each show. Actors hold scripts in front of them and may even blow a line or two, but the audiences don’t care. The program and some of the shows have been so well received that some shows like Gypsy, Chicago and Finian’s Rainbow, have opened on Broadway again. The City Center audiences responded so well that the presentations continue to this day. This season City Center is presenting the inaugural season of Encores!
