For the second time in the past two months, parents came to the microphone at the Sewanhaka High School District’s Board of Education meeting to publicly disparage the district’s English as a Second Language program. The program is currently housed in only one school within the five-school district — the H. Frank Carey High School — and some parents within the district believe it has created an unsafe environment at Carey.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District held a search meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Sewanhaka High School, to gather ideas from district residents about the district’s new superintendent. Warren Meierdiercks, who has been the district’s superintendent for the past five years, announced in December that he will be retiring on June 30, and the district has since been working to find a resident- and administration-approved replacement.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District is searching for its next superintendent, and will be holding a meeting on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Sewanhaka High School, at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. The Sewanhaka Board of Education is asking the public to submit comments for the superintendent search by March 4, through a survey on the district's website, but new comments can still be brought to the March 10 meeting.

The New York State Education Department released a new set of graduation statistics on Monday, Feb. 7, which showed a majority of students in the state are graduating without being adequately prepared for higher education.

At the Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 15, some parents expressed concerns about the district’s English as a Second Language program. The concerns focused on the fact that the program is only held at the H. Frank Carey High School, although there are four other schools in the district.

Gerald Waldman, of Huntington, the former assistant principal of Sewanhaka High School, was arraigned on charges of grand larceny and official misconduct on Feb. 18, accused of taking $113,000 from a union fund. Waldman, 59, was arrested by investigators from the Nassau County district attorney’s office.

The Franklin Square Union Free School District has been working over the past several years to implement state-of-the-art technology in its classrooms. Five years ago, the district didn’t even have an e-mail system; now, it is working on installing its final interactive whiteboards in general education classrooms, and its speech and hearing teachers are piloting iPads.

The 50th annual District Music Festival, sponsored by the Sewanhaka Central High School District, was held at the New Hyde Park Memorial High School on Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. The event featured the most talented young musicians from each of the district’s five schools, including the New Hyde Park, Sewanhaka, H. Frank Carey, Elmont Memorial and Floral Park Memorial high schools. Students were selected by audition in November, and more than 300 students from the district participated.
