The Elmont Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 30, beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park. The parade will travel south on Covert Avenue, to Hempstead Turnpike, then turns west on the turnpike, ending at the Elmont Memorial Library, located at 700 Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. The parade is expected to end around 11:15 a.m. more
The Elmont Fire Department was alerted of a house fire at 275 Emily Ave. in Elmont on May 7, at 7:03 p.m. Elmont Chief Mike Capoziello said the fire, which had fully engulfed the second floor of the home, was venting itself out a second floor window at the rear of the home. more
Frank Lozada has lived in Elmont for 11 years, and he has been a volunteer firefighter for the Elmont Fire Department’s Belmont Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 for two of those years. But from last May until about two weeks ago, he was banned from the department’s premises. more
As part of a statewide program, Recruit NY, the Elmont Volunteer Fire Department, at 95 Lehrer Ave. in Elmont, opened its doors to area residents on Sunday, April 10, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event focused on educating local residents about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter or emergency medical technician. Volunteer firefighter recruitment has become difficult for many Nassau County fire departments over the past several years, and the Elmont Fire Department is no exception. The department’s 170 members respond to approximately 2,000 emergency calls per year, and the department covers both Elmont and North Valley Stream. more

The girls Jigs Fire 02 soccer team, which includes girls from throughout Nassau County and Queens and is part of the Elmont Youth Soccer Club, will be competing in the second round of the New York Club Soccer League Cup on April 30, at 5:30 p.m., at the Dutch Broadway School soccer field in Elmont. The all-girls club, which has included the same group of second- and third-grade girls for the past two years, recently made it out of the first round of the New York Cup — a tournament established earlier this year by the Just Say Soccer league — and are one of 16 teams competing in the second round. more
