While Elmont residents, the Shinnecock Indian Nation and Detroit developer Michael Malik have been anxiously anticipating the construction of a casino at Belmont Park for several months, for residents to the track’s north, living in the Village of Floral Park, the feeling’s not mutual — it’s not even close.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo launched the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council on July 27 to redefine the relationship between the state government and businesses, in order to stimulate regional economic development and create jobs statewide. Cuomo made his announcement at SUNY Old Westbury.

Following a unanimous vote by the Town of Hempstead Board on Aug. 2, Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilmen James Darcy and Edward Ambrosino have announced that Elmont and Valley Stream will receive more than $44,000 in state and federal grants for local resident-oriented programs.

At a meeting last month, representatives of the Shinnecock Indian Nation and Elmont’s Coalition for Sustainable Development produced a conceptual development plan for a casino at Belmont Park, which includes a 400- to 600-room hotel, a gaming facility and entertainment complex with restaurants, a renovated Long Island Rail Road station and a soccer field.

Elmont residents have long sought revitalization of the old Argo Theater, a 2.9-acre property on Hempstead Turnpike and Elmont Road. Thanks to a vote last Tuesday by the Hempstead Town Board — including Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilman Ed Ambrosino and Councilman James Darcy — it looks like that plan is finally coming to fruition.
