Summer vacation for students this year follows almost a year and a half of coronavirus shutdowns and precautions. The learning loss during school closures was significant, and unless steps are taken, the U.S. risks the education of a generation of young people.

Elmont high school students were awarded the New York State Student Stars Award by Sen. Todd Kaminsky for the excellence they demonstrated both inside and out of the classroom this school year at a ceremony held on May 16 at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center.
"The recipients of the New York State Senate Student Stars Award have distinguished themselves as leaders in their schools and our local community as a whole," Kaminsky said, before presenting local students with the award.
