Seeing a need borne out of Hurricane Sandy, when Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department firefighters had to rescue residents from the second and third floor of their homes due to flooding, students at Mesivta Ateres Yaakov, a yeshiva high school for boys in Lawrence, raised $1,500 in less than a week a few months ago and purchased a rescue boat they presented to the LCFD.

In the wake of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s announcement last Saturday that the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant will see at least $730 million in upgrades thanks to funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state government, residents are now hopeful that they will soon be rid of the loud, annoying noise of generators and the overpowering smell of sewage at Nassau County’s largest waste facility.

I remember being on the brink of total sleep deprivation when Hurricane Sandy decided to drown my town, Atlantic Beach, with its salty wake and strong winds. Little did I know that I would be getting plenty of sleep in the days to come, because Sandy had done so much damage to Lawrence High School that it had to be closed for repairs.
