Hewlett High scores big for autism

Prior to the boys’ lacrosse game, Bulldogs 4 Autism, an organization begun by Hewlett High School lacrosse presented a $13,000 check to the Ascent Youth Alliance for Autism at the school’s Lacrosse Day on April 25.

Despite dropping its first two baseball games and failing to get out to the fast start coach Andy DeBernardo sought, Hewlett righted the ship quickly and is riding a hot streak of six wins in seven Conference A-II contests including four in a row.

It’s taken some time to get seven underclassmen into the mix for the Hewlett Lady Bulldogs on the lacrosse field, but one thing that’s been on point from the start is the offense. Led by senior low attack Emily Cohen and senior attack wing Sam DiSalvo, Hewlett has averaged 12 goals per game and there’s still room for growth.

After falling behind visiting Bethpage by 12 points late in the opening quarter and missing 10 straight shots from three-point range, Hewlett maintained its poise, heated up from the outside, and turned up the defensive pressure to earn a 65-56 victory in a Nassau Class A boys’ basketball first-round playoff game.

Big performances were the rule and not the exception for Hewlett and Lawrence wrestlers at the Nassau Qualifying Tournament hosted by Long Beach last Saturday. The Bulldogs and Golden Tornadoes each had three individual champions.
