Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway High School students participated in a schoolwide challah bake on Nov. 6 to celebrate the Shabbat Project. Students carefully followed a recipe and then braided their challot. Students also witnessed and learned about the mitzvah of Hafrashat Challah, in which one separates a piece from the dough, recites a blessing, and burns the piece of dough.

To the Editor:
If one were to only read the local newspapers in the Five Towns — including, I daresay, the Herald, which recently published an ad for the Trump “Freedom Rally” masquerading as a news piece (“Five Towns ‘Freedom Rally’ Sunday, Oct. 22”) — one would believe that the Jewish community, writ large, monolithically supports our current president.

A half dozen students from schools in the Five Towns were recipients of the Lawrence Association’s annual Good Citizens awards that are given to high school juniors and seniors living in Lawrence that have displayed a commitment to American ideals and community service. Each received an inscribed plaque delivered to their home by then Lawrence Civic Association President Paris Popack, who is now a village trustee.
