To help close the more than $300 million budget deficit that Nassau now faces, County Executive Ed Mangano’s recently proposed budget includes a proposal to end the county’s “guarantee” that it will pay refunds owed when homeowners successfully challenge their tax assessments.

With this week’s column, the Principal’s Office begins its sixth year. It’s time to look backward as well as forward. But first, a few thank yous are in order. Scott Brinton has not only been my editor, but has also become a friend and sounding board for new ideas. Executive Editor John O’Connell has always been a prime supporter and booster. Updated: 2:30 p.m.Nassau County Police and the U.S. Marshals Service cordoned off the Bellmore Post Office and surrounding streets at around 11 a.m. today, shutting down Merrick Road for several blocks to the east and west. According to police, a woman who U.S. marshals were tracking turned up at the mail facility with a bottle marked "sodium cyanide."
