Due to redistricting following the 2010 census, there is a new state Assembly district in western Nassau County. The 22nd District spans from Bellerose to North Woodmere and includes all or parts of Elmont, Franklin Square and Valley Stream.

A ceremony was held on Jan. 2 at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola for the inauguration of newly elected and re-elected representatives of the county's 19 districts. While it might be easy to overlook the office of county clerk, the office plays an important role in keeping Nassau County’s court cases and real estate humming. They hum now, at least, and that’s in large part the work of County Clerk Maureen O’Connell, who has earned the Herald’s endorsement.

But thousands of people use the services of the office every day, and while it is politically low-profile, it is vital to the county’s operations.
