The Hebrew Academy of the Five Towns and Rockaway held its 11th annual Golf Spring Classic and Spa Day at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor in memory of Jacob Greenberg, a former HAFTR student. HAFTR, which has campuses in Lawrence and Cedarhurst, has grades from preschool to high school.

The old saying, “A bad day of golf beats a good day at work,” was heard at the Inwood Country Club, where the Inwood Buccaneers Athletic Club held the fifth annual Frank DeCicco Memorial Golf Outing on July 16, and by the way the 72 participants slapped palms, shook hands and embraced — as family and good friends do — the adage was evident. The event honors the memory of Frank DeCicco Sr., a longtime Buccaneer booster.

Jeff Cooperstein, of Hewlett Bay Park, wore a pair pants that could have been designed by the makers of the children’s drawing toy Spirograph, Dr. Jeff Fine, from Hewlett Harbor, operated closest to the pin for a trophy and Kiwanis of the Five Towns presented a $2,500 check to the Long Island Children’s Museum, the honorees of the Kiwanis club’s 45th annual Marty Mongoni Golf Outing that took place at the Tam O’ Shanter Club in Glen Head July 16. Marc Field, Mark Zanansky and Jason Rosenthal was the winning team with the low score of 64.

A Five Towns youth institution is trying to make a comeback. Founded in 1956, the Inwood Buccaneers Athletic Club has been a staple of youth sports, offering children with an opportunity to play football or cheer during the fall, and play basketball during the winter; because of low enrollment numbers the organization hasn’t been able to run a football program since 2015. This year, the Buccaneers hope that changes.
